The 11th Underground Cinema
Film Festival and Comic Con
The 11th Underground Cinema Film Festival is an IFTA (Irish Film & Television Academy) Affiliated International Film Festival located in Dublin in Ireland. A champion of emerging filmmakers, Underground Cinema has the belief that no matter what the film’s budget or the director’s vision it’s the filmmakers passion that drives a film.
As technology allows greater access to short films as well as filmmaking tools, an increasing number of people are turning to short filmmaking as a form of expression and an opportunity to explore creative freedom. The fact that we received 300 more submissions in this category than last year speaks to that. Within them we saw a wave of truly original and outrageously distinctive films united by their uncompromised spirit. This year we will present a new generation of adventurous independent filmmaking, in which boundaries are explored, pushed and often broken. The creative means employed in these films will take audiences on a wild ride towards the future of cinematic storytelling.
Festivals through the years | Check Our Gallery
Live and Virtual Screenings
Our festival which is supported by Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, takes place in the magnificent Royal Marine Hotel, Dun Laoghaire, Co Dublin in Ireland from September 4th to the 6th. Whilst we have been making great progress towards hosting this years festival we are mindful of the Covid19 pandemic. Many independent filmmakers who have so far submitted their work to us since the beginning of the year rely on our help to promote their work to the public. The Irish Government announced their plans over 5 phases to get the country out of lock down on May 1st. On August 10th all cinemas and theatres are to reopen with social distancing measure in place. But we do need to bear in mind that if there is an increase in Covid numbers as a result of lifting these restrictions these Phased stages can start going backwards again so we are very mindful of that.
We have access to screening rooms that range in size from 200 capacity to 500 capacity. We have a risk management plan in place and we can manage social distancing no problem. We are working towards a live festival this year. However, if at any stage these Phases are reversed we have two options which are easy for us to manage.
1. We can either push the festival down the road by a couple of weeks. Its no problem for us to do that and we have access still to all the screening rooms we need in the hotel.
2. We can go digital. We’ve invested in a new website that we are currently working on. This new website will have the ability to upload any size files we want to our server and we can screen digitally online. The website has conference functionality for guests, directors, workshops etc. It’s a highly interactive website with chat functionality that will be available for Q&A’s directly after the screenings. Any video file that we do have is safe and secure on our server. No videos can be downloaded from the website and all files will be deleted from our system as soon as the screening is finished.
So, to conclude. UCFF will be going ahead this year. It could be live or it could be digital. If we can get through these Phases without having to go backward, then we will enjoy a live festival where everyone can network again while still keeping social distancing in place.
